That makes me angry too. How disorganized and unprofessional are they, thinking they are allowed to send out letters of that nature, to people they suspect of wrong doing with absolutely no evidence to back up their claims? This is astonishing! Clearly they are under the pathetic conception of, we are so big and bad that we can get away with anything! They need a slap to the face; but the middle finger you gave them is just as good! Well, I really hope you don't get thrown in court, but if you do I hope you kick their ass.

I was looking at your current fresh from the stewpot vlog and you said that you were looking at online videos and constantly surfing and somehow came to less than 300mb..... That video you posted is greater than 200mb alone streamed from beginning to end. Are you sure your month did not reset somewhere for the data monitoring?

Square Enix sent me a letter, it said "Did you get in any romances at the clinic?" I'm thinking "no..." but I read on, it said "Still a virgin?" My eyes bulged. I said, "What is this? Some kind of legal letter? They want to rape me or something?" With questions like that, I guess they sorta like being alone a lot.

Wow. That's pretty bullshit not even kidding. i can't even think of words to express how fucking bullshit that is.

When I played EQ2 I was threatened by email that they would ban my account for usage of inappropriate text in the chat channel. So I look over my logs. No swear words, no racial slurs, no sexist comments, nothing. I found out later that this player on the server was reporting people randomly in the chat channel. And without due process SOE sent me a warning email of account termination. It gets better. If the player felt like doing it again within that week they could then ban me. Because I was somehow on violation for nothing. I emailed them to ask them what the hell I did wrong. They just told me not to do whatever I did again. Wow! Justice did come through later. A lot of players got together and reported that SOB. He was banned for 6 months. I only found out by asking the chat room. Thank god people are helpful.

I say that, because I get scam emails from people trying to steal my frozen World of Warcraft account all the time, pretending to be Blizzard. If they know about me, I'm sure someone could have found your old address and phone number online.

I agree with that guy who posted earlier about this being a troll. Because of how not legit this letter is, I believe that someone got a hold of a SE letter head & format and just trolled you because you are a popular internet entity.

I mean think about it, your playonline username is a bunch of random letters and numbers that you have no control over. Hey Lordkat, do reviewers ever get cease and desisted or kicked off youtube for their reviews? I know Square didn't C&D you because a review or anything I was just curious if you ever have any problems with that aspect.

When Video Games became big business it lured the wrong guys in, guys with trigger-happy legal fingers and no sense of fanservice (no, not the nude one) at all. Slimy lil Business-school graduates and other sub-par beings on morale-scales. At those times i wish Video Games were still a more minor segment of the entertainment-business...

Several places I have worked were rather strict about that point, though no good explanation was ever provided. I suppose that in case someone cries foul there will be a paper trail.

I really wouldn't get too worked up about this. I truly believe that letter to be fraud and actually not be from SE. Hell, all I had to do was glimpse over it to see that.

I would more or less say, don't make a big stink over this unless you can actually obtain indisputable evidence that can prove the letter came from them. That will save you from possibly having to make an apology in the future.

Ok, I used to hold SquareEnix in high regards, but now they lost quite a bit of respect to be enough where I was thinking on getting FF12 to not getting FF12 or 13 until I see it in a bargain bin. Good luck on this, Jason.

It looks fake in my opinion. Just doesn't look real there is no seal of approval or a signature confirming that somebody looked over this.
In any case if you're really concerned I suggest you contact some sort of lawyer to look over.

Personally I think its some butt-hurt employee who using some old ties was able to get some information on you to try and get some money out of you.

To all those saying this is a fake letter, you'd be surprised. Remember Square Enix is a Japanese company. Their ideas of how you deal with your consumers is very different than an American companies ideas. They may have lawyers trained in US law but the guys up top making final write-offs for things are going to be Japanese.

Also it's true, most C&D letters are a scare tactic. They know that to /really/ call them on their bluff you'll have to spend money you can't afford taking them to court. Until companies are challenged on these C&Ds and start loosing they'll keep abusing them.

When Chrono Trigger Crimson Echoes was C&Ded, Square made similar demands. I'm not sure if the letter looked exactly like this, but when they responded, one of SE's lawyers responded to them and gave his name.

Worse still, this slimeball actually STALKED the project lead (Zeality) on facebook before sending the C&D to gain information about him. I think that your assumption that they dredged their old customer files is correct, Kat. They probably are in the process of doing worse than that, and I'd venture to say that if you have a facebook or a myspace, they're probably already lurking around there to gain info about you.

Honestly, these guys are getting horrendously excessive with this crap. It's creepy how they do it, and it's sickening that they target such small threats. Seriously, a FFXI emulator? Like that's going to cost them anything. And then there are the fangames left dead in their wake. Like CE could have ever competed with something like FFXIII (which, by the way, looks like a linear piece of over hyped j-crap).

Anyway, I hope you can free yourself from their legal crab claws. I'm pretty sure they won't have much of a case, since their only pretense for targeting you seems to be your username.

I stand with the people who say they're not picking up FFXIII because of this. Further, until SE can be bothered to make a public apology for this, I will not purchase any more of their products; I'll be certain to check my preorders and cancel any that they are involved in.
