I don't know what you're using to edit footage, but if you're not already using windows movie maker, maybe you could run the footage through their to make a .wmv file? Those tend to be smaller then a lot of other file types and come out a lot smaller in file size.

Course you may already be using that and I'll just sound like an idiot.

May I suggest using Format Factory for the footage? I use it for all the footage I do and it drastically decreases file size. You can also choose your own encoding options with it.

I recommend checking it out and seeing if it'll help.
