HOLY shit! I was never able to beat this one as a kid but I played it all the time! Can't wait to see you show me how! Thanks LordKat!

Great as always but even more note-worthy because of it being the black sheep of the original Zelda series. And I have to say that it was an axe or hatchet, most definately not a mace (9:20 or so). I hate to nitpick, but I know you have D&D skillz enough to know the difference, lol. <3

It would be sweet if boots that let you walk on top of the ocean (and not just hover over it) would show up in a modern Zelda game. Jump from wave to wave in the middle of a storm...

Okay, seriously, how do you EVER manage to keep enough magic on hand to even ATTACK Thunderbird? I mean, you use so much magic throughout the Palace, and then by the time you reach him, there's not enough for Thunder! That's the ONLY thing that kept me from beating this game when I was nine...

...and then the battery failed and my file got erased. >.<

The first Zelda game I ever played. I was never able to go anywhere in this game as a kid. Like Metroid, I never knew where the hell I was going.

I love this game. (: If you're looking for another Until We Win action RPG in a similar vein, I highly, HIGHLY recommend giving "Legacy of the Wizard" the ol' UWW treatment. It seems tailor-made for this show, and if you've never played it before, you will LOVE the challenge - both in terms of actual dexterity, and in terms of puzzle-solving and exploration. It's a pretty damn obtuse game, but damn does it ever rule. Here, check this out:

Seems like a great choice, no? (:

Gotta pick this game again and finish it, I was doing well until I got the the last two palaces and got stuck. I died a lot already, but it won't hurt dying more to beat this game. I must admit, some of the techniques I skipped them because finding them without a walkthrough seemed impossible to me, I found some things like the guy who lets you cross the bridge by complete accident. Still, I had my fun running over the world looking for these secrets.

I would like to know if there is a place were I can request games for UWW besides posting them in comments, because I have a few I would like to see beaten like The 3D Battles of World Runner.

Again, great video and keep them coming!

I always hated how many people disliked this game. I never saw why. It was such a great game. I've never beat it myself as I never actually owned it, I had to play it at the houses of various cousins of mine and I always loved it so much. I really need to get it someday soon and work on beating it. I still look back at this as one of my favorites.

I have this game for my GBA. Got all the Thunder Bird and got my ass kicked then I made the really stupid mistake of turning it off. Then i realized that I would have to go through the long path from Hyrule Castle filled with enemies which is pretty much a dungeon in it's self. Then through the massive palace only to get my ass kicked by thunder bird again. I just couldn't take the amount of crap this game puts at you just to get to the boss. and I'm ashamed to admit it but I quit the game without beating it. Zelda 2 beat me the bastard.

Coincidentally, I played through this about a month ago. The Cartridge is still in my NES. I hated this game when I was a kid because it was way too hard. I couldn't even get started, as soon as I entered an encounter screen I'd get my ass handed to me and game over. The real trick to this game is learning how your sword and shield work. Your sword's slower and has less range than you'd expect in a side scrolling platformer, and your sword's beam is practically useless, which can be disapointing after the asset the sword's beam was in the original LOZ. But what really through me until I got used to it, and even then I really had to pay attention, is how the shield works. In a side scroller, if a projectile is coming toward my head, my instinct is to duck. In Zelda II, the correct reaction is to stand there and let it hit your shield, if you duck it will hit you. If it's coming toward your feet, you can either jump over it, which is my instinct, or duck which will lower your shield and deflect the projectile.

travisweb: I don't know about the GBA version, but the NES version mercifully let's you start from the last palace when you die. It's the only time in the game that it let's you do that.

Great review. I'm feeling very tempted to grab my own copy of Zelda II and have at it.

I think a game that might be up your alley for Until We Win is Faxanadu. I'm not sure if you've played it before but it seemed somewhat challenging or at least in the same vein as Zelda II.

Another great classic covered :)

This game caused me several headaches as a child but me and my brother have beaten it.
And yes, Thunderbird is a lot harder than the Shadow. Even without the corner trick.

Keep em coming. Greets from Germany.

I'm surprised you didn't use the jump trick to hit the knights through their block. I don't think I ever actually fought them man to man.

The worst part of that game was the temples with invisible holes all over the floors. Seriously, HATE them. The true love of this game came from it being so different. Leveling up side scroller action platform RPG Zelda game, that most fans of the N64 game haven't played or heard of.

I always thought thunderbird was easier then shadow myself, but I didn't use the corner trick :\. Great work as always Lordkat!

Ooh, I'll second Faxanadu. That's a great game. Goes with my Legacy of the Wizard recommendation, too, since both Faxanadu and Legacy of the Wizard are Falcom properties.

@ Machohervey yeah I know but I made the mistake of turning it off which meant I didn't start at the final palace. THe GBA is nothing more then a straight up port.

Amazing..
It sure looks sadistic. Who designed this anyway??
And I still cannot believe that all this is able to fit only one 8-bit cartridge. That is a great achievement.

Yeah! The most underrated Zelda game yet! It was awesome to finally see the ending....though after all these years it was quite underwhelming.

Nice review! Just felt that maybe you could focus a little bit more on commenting on the game rather than just doing a quick walkthrough...

Yeah that's an axe not a mace. :)

It's always nice to see a game I've played and beaten on here, making the current list two (I've beaten Castlevania 4 and I've played Battletoads, but never beat it even though I did get past the speed bikes all the time when I was a kid.) I'm a huge Zelda fan, and have loved the series since playing Link to the Past on the SNES when it was still relatively new. I've beaten every game in the franchise, and never was I more frustrated than with this game. As you said, it's panned by a lot of die-hards fans because it's so different from all the other games, but that's not the reason I didn't like the game. I actually respect it quite a bit for being so daring, something the series hasn't openly done in a long time. I think for it's time it was a great experiment, but overall it was just a really difficult game to beat without extensive map making, pattern recognition, and plain old experimentation. You're given very little in terms of clues on where to go next or where to find something you need to progress. I always felt the gameplay could have been a little more forgiving, given the overall difficulty of many of the normal enemies. I also wished that the story (and by extension, the translation) was better explained in game, instead of being limited to what could fit into the tiny box given over for all dialogue.

But enough about me, I thought the review was pretty well executed. I kind of wanted to hear more about your thoughts on the gameplay itself, and maybe some of your favorite techniques for beating the knights and/or finding stuff when you were lost. Having played through it, I also was waiting to hear you talk about the extra bits, like the hidden one ups and that guy named Error. Lastly, it's really hard to focus on your directions when watching the video itself, not because you're not showing what you're describing, but just because the clips you used are always you doing interesting things like getting stabbed to death by iron knuckles.

I really love the UWW videos, and look forward to future episodes.

Lordkat, great episode but 2 complaints:

1. Why didn't you mention all the magic containers you need for the spells? You need to pick them up or you won't be able to get some of the spells.

2. If you give directions, it's way too fast IMO.

Dumb question. You mention that the Spell spell reveals two hidden secrets. One of them is the Skeleton Key... what's the other one?

Hey, you know if you jump then hit attack on the way down, you can always hit the knights without doing the whole blocking/stab duel... never got how people missed this since when it came out, everyone knew this :idk:

also those dinosaur looking spear guys are easily killed by doing this above technique, but downstabbing right before the stab when coming down

finally [yes I was typing as the episode played] shadow link is a test of button mashing... just keep slightly pushing towards him and tapping the attack button as fast as you can... you will eventually out duel the speed and land a hit... repeat...

If you would like a request for a pair of very hard games, that are, on the whole, well made, look for Faxanadu and 8 Eyes. Both are even enjoyable, but wow, I don't think they were made to be beaten.

You'll have fun with these while having hair-pulling frustration about them. Trust the anonymous voice.

Review Blaster Master 2 for the sega genesis. That was very hard. Would like to see you go through it and beat it.

i do remember this game. one of the few in the zelda series that i didn't like. could never find the lightning spell and for the life of me, i could never figure out what the vague spell called spell did.
