Good stuff. Keep up the good work.
Wow. This was an amazing episode. I dont know what to say after seeing this.
i think shiny interactive owns the games, but it was doug tennapel who created both earthworm jim + characters and the tv show.
That's the problem, Anon, I really don't know who *owns* Earthworm Jim. The game is a licensed product, as are the TV series, but shiny claims copyright to "Earthworm Jim" and there was a bankruptcy case involving the rights to "Earthworm Jim"
So, I gave up and just wrote a whole bunch of crap at the end about how I don't own it.
excellent choice of game man! i haven't even watched it yet cuz I'm waiting for it all to preload but I can't wait to see this \m/
love your videos dude!
Dude I love the work you are doing at this site, your videos are all very good, but I think you may have met your match with the game "Mushihimesama" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sQZuidKexBQ)
I wonder if you would consider attempting it, I would love to see you do a review about this. If super surfer drove you insane, then I wonder what this will do to you.
Mindless
Awesome...
Will there be Benzaie and Co outtakes?
I can't seem to log in :/
Anyways, good video. Earthworm Jim's a fun game, but a hard one to be sure. However, I probably wouldn't rank it as quite sinister (Like Silver Surfer and Battletoads), but it is very very hard, that's for sure. What I would rank as sinister would be a little unknown gem known as 'Holy Diver' fror the NES. That game is evil.
your reviews keep on getting better and better at the reviews
good video, You should try Pocky & Rocky (snes) and comix zone (sega genesis & 32X)
Top Half of Benzaie. Heh. I wonder who added the words to his sign.
Here is a suggestion for a virtually impossible game to beat. Batman (by Data East) on the NES. That game still gives me fits of frustration. Without a doubt one of the more difficult console games ever released.
No not really. Batman's pretty easy if you take your rime with it.
I AM AN EARTHWORM JIM FANBOY!
And thus, I have mastered the game and know better ways on how to do everything in the game. First off, during the Andy Asteroids levels, if you collect 50 bubbles or more, you are rewarded with an extra continue. Second, you can shoot the crate at the first boss and the dog's name is Fifi. Third, there is a hidden air pod in the Down the Tubes area where you are given 100 sec. to get through the level (at least in the Sega CD ver.). The hidden pod refills your timer to 60 sec. If you're good, you can get through the whole game without firing a single shot from your blaster (not including the boss's), that way, you can max out your ammo at 5000 rounds and can wail on the final boss until she's dead. The easiest way to kill off the transforming garbage can from level one is to save your Super Plasma Shots, that rule applies the same for Chuck on the Sega CD version. Professor Monkey-for-a-head's greatest creation is Jim's Super Suit which was originally fitted for Queen Slug-for-a-butt. Finally, Earthworm Jim was created by Douglas Tennaple and is currently owned by Interplay. The game was developed by Shiney Entertainment. Also, if you're desperate to survive on Snot a Problem, ramming yourself into the wall when cornered by Major Mucus and the snot monster will make you spin and make it less likely that the snot monster will kill you.
Ok, fanboyism over. also, great episode!
I just loved playing this game because it was so weird and freaky.
Another great episode LordKaT! Keep up the good work!
"Professor Monkey for a head and his assistant, Monkey Professor for a head" sounds so F'n hilarious!
The 7th level that was only in the genesis version was called intestinal distress. You climbed through giant intestines and fought an angry gall bladder or kidney I think. I miss Shiny Entertainment. MDK was the first game to feature the first person zoom-able sniper scope. They also made an RTS for the PC called Sacrifice which was almost as insane if not more so than Earthworm Jim. You played as wizard that got transported to a realm being fought over by 5 gods. One of them being the god of air; a giant helium tank wearing an Evil Kanevil jacket with a smiley face balloon for a head and voiced by Tim Curry.
I'm serious.
http://guidesarchive.ign.com/guides/14060/strat.jpg
It had a great story, great characters, great voice acting, AND NOBODY BOUGHT IT.
There just aren't enough game studios like Shiny these days.
Seriously go to GOG.com and get Sacrifice. You won't regret it.
Oh yeah the God of Earth was a giant earthworm wearing overalls named James, and one of the spells he gave you was called Bovine intervention which drops a giant cow from the heavens insta-kiling any enemy. And he was voiced by the brother from Everybody Loves Raymond.
Hey LordKaT, here's another couple game requests:
Batman for NES
RoboCop for NES
I'll just repeat my request I made in another feedback:
Fester's Quest
I'll be very impressed if you can do it. Have you thought about it?
Watching this video later, by the way. Will comment then.
you seriously got someone to do the shirt thing?
i love lordkats
I would've been listening to what you said more, but I was too busy rocking out to Night on Bare Mountain and Maple Leaf Rag. Great background music selection, Jason :D
Another great video Jason and a great choice of game as well. I remember this being one of my favorite Genesis games growing up, too bad the sequel was laughably easy. I've gotta say that you're becoming one of my favorite online game reviewers and I'm happy to see that you've become featured content on TGWTG.
I've got a suggestion for a game to try; Back to the Future. Yes, I know it's not exactly the greatest game ever made, it is an LJN creation, but good God is it difficult. The diner level that most other reviewers make it to is a cake walk compared to the later stages. I've beaten it once before on an emulator using A LOT of save states and would love to see you tackle it legit. Anyway, take it easy man and I hope you get well soon.
I love Until We Win. After watching a few episodes about two months ago, it became a series I look for regularly now. Also loved EWJ.. both the games and the cartoon. Excellent stuff! :)
That said.. I completely forgot about the game a poster above mentioned. Holy Diver. Would love to see that one tackled, even though it wasn't released in the US.
"Holy Diver.. you've been down too long in the midnight sea. Oh, what's becoming of me? Ride the tiger, you can see his stripes but you know he's clean. Oh, don't you see what I mean?"
*just walks away now*
Im must say that im a big fan of your show and i would really want you to try Shadow of the beast for the sega genesis its the hardest game i have ever tried back in the day i would say that thats a real challange
I have an idea for a theme song. There's a swedish band called Machinae Supremacy that makes video-game influenced metal music. All their early songs are available for free at machinaesupremacy.com/webography.php
Several of the band members are active in the band's forum and if you asked to use one of their early songs I don't see why they would refuse.
A song like Hero or Arcade would be a perfect fit for a series like this, lyrically and musically, in my opinion. Check it out.
Great choice and review. I really enjoy the series.
Keep up the good work.
Greetings from Germany.
i love this series so much man keep up the good work lordkat cant wait to see what you will do next
oh i forgot i have a game request Illusion of Gaia try that one one for size its a crazy game
I remember beating EWJ in two days when i was 13 y.o., I never realised it was hard :) Seriously thou, if you want a challenge AND a legitimately fun game – there is only one suggestion – Double Dragon 3. I know AVGN bitched a lot about it, but the game is beatable, I’ve done it myself :)
p.s. A lot of people suggest Batman for NES, which i think is THE best game for Nintendo, but it's not THAT hard. Once you get the hang of it, you can pretty much beat it any day of the week...
Over the last week or so I've fell in love with this show. I have a suggestion, I had "Booger Man" for the Sega Genesis ages ago and could never beat it. Perhaps you could give that a try.
Keep up the good work. I'll be watching.
Man, this shit is as entertaining as what Spoony does yet it's a distinctly different type of classic gaming show. It's not just a rehash of all the other type of "critic" video cliches either. This is like the ultimate tv show for 1992. Get this guy on Giantbomb already. It's just so great to hear this kind of organic discourse and strategy from an enthusiastic video gamer. Some of those scripted bits aren't as great as the meat and taters, but that's probably just because you haven't found the best way to write your voice yet. The organic, conversational speaking voice is 90 percent of the battle and you got it. AVGN seems to be way overscripted and his speaking voice is still kind of muddy after all these years.
For the most part these video game shows really get going when you've got people who can talk a streak and not have a lot of speech disfluency. This is not only well crafted, but actually informative. The UWW "rules" also add a great structure to the whole thing. This should be screened in classrooms across this great nation.
Goddamn great show. If you ain't selling t-shirts that say "You're gonna die. A lot" yet ye oughta.
Don't suddenly quit making great videos. Avoid hard alcohol and fertile women. Keep your stick on the ice.
Also I hope your are a fan of Symphony X and Testament. 'Cause those bands fucking rule.
I think Kat's said that he won't review shumps (probably thinking of danmaku / bullet hell shooters at the time) already. But really, those games are in their own sort of category - casual games, hard games, nintendo hard, and danmaku.
Anyway. Since you've moved on to the SNES, why not take a crack at Demon's Crest / Firebrand?
You don't have to shoot the snowman on "What the Heck" You can whip it, and it won't spit fireballs at you, essentially making it a joke of an enemy. I've only done that battle a hundred times, and not once have taken damage from it.
i love ur show man!!! i finally know how to beat earthworm jim!!! thanks a lot!!
and dude u got to make one for FINAL FIGHT!!!
that game has haunted my dreams since i was 8!!!
There's a secret area in level five that lets you bypass alot of the normal areas, but it's probably harder if anything. If I remember right theres several flashing lights in the shape of a capital H somewhere and if you jump up at them you'll be teleported to an area that's pitch black. There will be occasional light sources forming safe zones, when you venture into the dark you'll be attacked by monsters you can only see as red glowing eyes. Continue on and a giant eye monster will chase you and you'll have to run away.
Fester's Quest was extremely hard. I beat it, but it's definitely worth reviewing. I have two bits of advice: 1 MAX OUT YOUR GUN B4 DOING ANYTHING ELSE!! The other versions of your weapons suck so bad that not doing this is just plain dumb. 2. get a rapid fire controller. if you can do push-ups on your thumbs, then u don't need one. otherwise, get one. ^__^
and please do Ninja Gai Den 1 for the NES!!! I have tried for almost 20 years to beat that !#$% game!!!!
This is funny as hell, those cameos were hilarious, and your expression after them was even funnier. Keep up the good work.
On a side note I remember watching one of your recent Vlogs and you said something about a theme song. I don't think you need a whole theme song (though it would be cool) but I think just having some kick ass guitar lick in the intro in place of the current music you have would be great. I'm sure you can find a random guitarist who could to it for cheap maybe even free.
Nice review. Never was a fan of the game series, but it's good to see that it's not forgotten.
As for gaming requests, I've got a couple:
1. Warlock for the Sega Genesis. This game had haunted my childhood for years, so much so that I eventually did a Let's Play of it a couple of years ago just to get it out of my system, and even then, I had to revisit it because I resorted to cheating during the later levels, and I felt I was robbing my audience of the experience. This game is pure evil, and any chance for a gamer like you to tackle it and beat it into submission should be taken. One tip I discovered while playing it that I'd like to pass to you, though, if you decide to do the game: when you use an item, you're rendered invincible for the short time it takes to cast the item, and the orb that follows you whips around you during that time like a damaging shield. It's extremely useful if you're about to get hit bodily from an enemy and you're not able to hit them with your normal bolt, and if you stockpile enough healing potions, shields, and thunder/earthquake items, you can utterly pwn the final boss by getting up at point blank range to him and unloading on him, utilizing this exploit to get in a lot more hits per spell.
2. Eternal Champions for the Sega Genesis: I'm not sure if fighting games are game for this series, but if any fighter needs to get the UWW treatment, it's this game. Another game that had plagued my childhood, I think you're considered a legend if you could get to and beat the titular final boss. I've just never seen a fighting game so brutal in its difficulty.
3. Knuckles Chaotix for the Sega 32X: Ah, the home console Sonic game that time forgot. Seriously, five zones with five acts each, plus a final boss with multiple forms and wonky 3D special stages you need to go through to acquire six special rings, all while controlling two characters from a choice of seven at once connected by an unwieldy bungee cord, two of which are utterly useless to you and actually hinder your progress? If that doesn't qualify for UWW, I dunno what game does.
Well, good luck with any further UWW videos you make.
I would like to see a "Until We Win" of the NES game Darkman.
Great analysis of the game. Looks like a pretty hard game and you did a good job. How long does it take to beat these games?
Again, I nominate: Fester's Quest!!
Funny and informative, thats what I like to see. Earthworm Jim can get pretty tough towards the end but it's not the hardest game in the world. As for UWW, I discovered it last week and went through them all. It's nice to see someone making things like this without all the stupidity that comes with alot of someone like AVGN's videos. I want to see the fucking game not a guy in his 20's smearing shit on NES cartridges.
Keep up the good work man. You're getting better with each video.
Actually, I could swear that Professor Monkey-For-A-Head works alone and has no assistant named Monkey Professor-For-A-Head: said assistant is just the Professor flipped over while the monkey does the legwork. Maybe I'm wrong.
Also in the show, at the end of one episode, the Professor got turned into a monkey himself. Hence making him...Monkey Monkey-For-A-Head. I want some of whatever they were smoking.
When i played it(i dont remember when because it was a long time ago) i thought the game was easy.Only level i had problems with was what the heck but i think it is time that i turn on my trusty old pal Genesis and give this game a go for the second time...
Legendary difficulty? Nah
In my opinion, the game ain't to tough. Well except the damn dog! THAT DOG LOST ME ALL MY CONTINUES AND LIVEs EVERY TIME!
Seriously that is the only bit i found overly frustration, the dog. After seeing this vid i went back to play it again remembering it from when i was a younger. It seemed much harder back then. The furthest i could ever get to was "down the pipes" and i had to get my dad to do the submarine sections for me :p So i went back and played the GBA version. On normal (not sure what difficulty you played it on) and completed it second try. First try i got up to level 5. I played it again and completed. I made it up to the dog level loseing 3 live but gaining 2. So i had only got one less live than i started off with. I had completed every Andy Astroids level with over 50 bubbles to get the extra continues and that dog set me back soooooooo many lives! I thought i wasn't gonna make it. I got past the stage and by god did i wish you covered intestinal distress. I fell into the worst noob trap in any game. To your left is a pipe. I immediately pressumed that was were i came from! I walked to the right because every other level has you doing that and bam! I pit. Dead. That was evil, though the level itself only took some patience. So i went through the final level. Got to the end boss and... found it suprisingly easy. Just shot her until i was out of ammo and kept using the head whip until my ammo had recharched. rinse and repeat. She can't attack as long as you keep attacking her so just never let up and you should scrape through. Though yeah she does have alot of health. I was shocked! I completed the game on my second try! Though of course, i may not of been playing on the hardest difficulty setting and i don't know if the GBA version is any easier but i felt good completeing second try but i really don't think it is as hard as you made it out to be.
P.S. BTW Was the 99 seconds air refuel in the last submarine level in the version you played? Cause in the GBA one there is one which makes the last submarine section a doddle.
Dude, you have GOT to play Krion Conquest for the NES next. It's an EVIL version of Megaman!
I have a request:
God Hand for the ps2
I really would like you to try something not on the old nintendo consoles
Great video, I thought it was very entertaining.
This is the only game (I think?) so far that you've played(LordKat) that I finished as a young teen, all the others I couldn't finish.
Anyway , wtf is that sweater twirling thing? lol.
...
This must be the easiest game so far on UWW right? I have beaten this game tons of times as a kid, and Im not a great gamer by any stretch of the imagnation. True it has some frustrating moments, but nothing spectacular...except for the water level;) Anyways, great show, didnt realy care for it first, but it has grown on me, keep up the good work!
Hi Lordkat,
Great vid! You surely have great gaming skills, but what about a hardcore game that will test your patience, because you'll have to beat more than a hundred levels without any possibilities of password ??? I dare you, I double dare you, to beat Kid Cameleon on the SEGA Genesis.
PS: Keep up the good work man, you totally deserve to be on TGWTG.com
This is so good. The sequel is even crazier. The level entitled "Jim's now a blind cave salamander" which had Moonlight Sonata as it's background track comes to mind.
Sorry about the hardware troubles, hope they get fixed soon!
Hey you should review Super Smash TV for the SNES, hard as hell, end bosses take forever to kill and the final level is menacing, I remember I had to play half an hour just one screen to get enough keys to get to the evil commentator man!
