Traditional books are better for the environment then not using books at all. Paper isn't made from rain forests and old growth wood. It's made from fast growing trees planted in tree farms. Further the act of producing books means the carbon in the trees isn't available until the book is destroyed. Dead tree books are carbon sequestration.
