Since Firefox sucks, I decided to give the advice of several dozen people a go and switch to Opera.
After a full week of using it, I'm liking it a lot. I'm not sold on the idea that Opera is "the future of browsers" as one zealot put it, but it has certainly met my needs where Firefox has failed. Specifically:
No crashes - since I'm running on Ubuntu, I'm amazing that Opera 10 doesn't crash, at all. Firefox, even after a perfectly clean install, would crash upwards of 10 times per day. As someone who makes a significant portion of his income online, that was unacceptable.
It doesn't look like garbage - Firefox just doesn't belong on a modern desktop. It looks like it's open source. While opera doesn't exactly fit Ubuntu's desktop color scheme, at least it looks professional.
I love speed dial - especially on my mobile phone. On my desktop I can live without it, but on a mobile platform, it's great to not have to type anything to get to what are essentially my favorite websites.
It's fast - possibly being the most important element in my decision, Opera is amazingly fast on my computer, the same system that Firefox struggles on.
Now, its only been a week since I gave in and started to use Opera. Maybe I won't like it a month from now, but for now, I'm happy with having almost the same experience on my desktop as I do on my cell phone.

Ya he gay
Ps: opera is ugly
Ps: ps: lordkat can't funny
Ps: ps: ps: lordkat = biscuit
Here's an idea, go to Windows 7. Seriously, it's much better than what one would expect
New version of Vista? Where do I find the bandwagon?!! *rolls eyes*
I cant say that I have ever used Opera before, although the plugins/addons support for Firefox is what sells FF for me. The only thing I can agree with you on is the fact that FF doesn't handle flash video too well. I am running a awesome system and I shouldn't get hang ups on flash. I will say though that the Linux FF is better than the Windows version. in my experience anyway. As far as IE goes, I WILL NOT use that ever again. IE has ruined thier reputation with me once and for all. Anyway, good luck using Opera, now I am tempted to check it out.
Seriously though, how does Opera 'look professional'?
Firefox makes some attempt to integrate into the environment(and usually fails given its cross platform libraries) but Opera just sticks to QT with their own skins which(last time I checked) don't effect the drop down menus and just leaves them as windows 95 grey.
If you like a QT browser in a true QT environment give Kubuntu a try and its browser, Konqueror.
There is a Kubuntu download in the repos but it will flood your application list with a load of new stuff. I would recommend a fresh install or just on a virtual machine.
I would recommend AmigaOS. Only Amiga makes it possible.
LordKat, just try Chrome. I've been using it the day it came out and I love it. Really the best browser, at least in my opinion.

Well after I switched to opera it I stopped having problems and I bet that someone has made a skin that you would like...
Hurrah! Glad you're enjoying Opera, and happy if I had a small part in encouraging to give it a go! (I was the poster of the Amen... comment in your divorce thread)
As others have suggested, there are plenty of other skins, addons (widgets) and other things to check out at http://my.opera.com/community/customize/
What keeps me at Firefox is the addons. I am regularly horrified when I sit down at an other computer and start browsing without adblockplus.
I totally agree with you about Opera. Firefox was great until it started consuming 300MB of RAM and Google hasn't finished Chrome for Linux yet (Chromium doesn't count). Opera is a decent browser, and as great as AdBlockPlus is, for me it doesn't excuse the problems Firefox has.
Plus, if you like to run your own browser from a flash drive on another computer (which is great for an institutional setting), Firefox 3.5 grew to over 60MB, Chrome got to 40MB and was still going up, but Opera installed at and stayed at 10MB. Even with all the caching and history-saving BS turned off I couldn't keep the other browsers from taking over my flash drive. That amount of space usually isn't an issue for large flash drives, but access speeds on them aren't so great.
And Lynx is great. I use it on my jailbroken iPod Touch all the time. For what I use it for, it is way faster and better than Mobile Safari.
I've been using Opera for 6 years and never had any complaints with it. It's fast, smart and elegant, there are some issues with some sites and flash content, not because of the browser, but because of the idiot programmers that use FireBug, and i know because i used to work in Webdesign, and would usually get into arguments with the programmers on this subject. Opera is the only browser to get 100% on the ACID test, and with the new features of Opera Unite, Link and Turbo, it is easily the smart choice.
Good for you !
when i used ubuntu i had to switch to i386 opera, however i felt that like i was just using opera thou the wine loader. but firefox does suck on linux
I'm surprised no Chromium, it works very nice for me, but the addons for firefox are essential to me. Then again, I haven't ever tried Opera, so I can't say much.
Your firefox crashes seem to be a local problem though, not that I'm saying you're doing anything wrong, just curious as to what would make it crash so often for you, has it said anything in terminal or if you use debug?
I find it funny that the fact that you assume it's a new Vista is bandwagonish in itself, 7 is decent (for a windows os)- even torvalds has praised it.
I've been an incredibly satisfied Opera user since 2001, and I've tested pretty much every major browser version since. Opera still has some rare flash issues, as mentioned here, but the good points FAR outweigh this minor flaw. Plus, Opera Link has made my life so much easier I simply can't live without it - as usual, features like this and Speed Dial are already being copied by other browsers... heh.
Well, what I really meant to say is: Opera DOESN'T need any extensions to do way more than any other browser out there. For instance, instead of installing AdBlock, all you need to be free of ads is following the instructions in this site: http://www.fanboy.co.nz/adblock/
About 12 seconds is all you need to stop being bothered by ads in Opera.
Welcome to the club. :)

I enjoy using Opera on my Fedora running netbook.
I was using Firefox on this Windows computer up until today, but I got really sick of waiting for things to load, and the constant freezing up, and screwing up Blip video's for some reason (and loading them really slow).
Today I just said screw it and went over to Chrome. Loving it so far and I'm not looking back.
Way to go! Opera is imho the best browser (at least it works best for me and my computer). :)
