What company made the Pickled Vegetable? Was there any brand listed?
The pickled vegetables sound like they might be Kimchi.
I wonder if I was the only one thinking of the Weebl and Bob "Big bag of Crabs." song during this.
Everything you ate is actually Japanese in origin.
What he ate was a preserved Daikon. it's preserved with miso and sake. the sake is so strong that it causes burning. You're supposed to eat it in small slices and on top of rice. The inside is a little soft and the outside gives some kind of breaking crunch.
I eat it regularly and it's good.
The crabs are too sweet for my taste. Prefer them to be homemade. Without the sugar they are actually quite good.
The obvious would be the first item. Umeboshi. The salted plum seed. The additional shiso probably gives it a very hearty herbal flavor.
if you wanna try something that most people don't like, you gotta try Natto (usually found in the cold section) or Shiokara (usually found frozen). They can be found at asian markets but you'd have better luck at Japanese markets.
Aw man that pickled vegetable looked like a turd that someone stepped in.
...The pickled plums are suppose to be eaten with rice (Japanese thing).
Wait, Kanikko? It sounds familiar...Oh wait, it's a Japanese Crab snack.
Pickled vegetable? NO IDEA, sounds painful to eat tho.
