Q&A Thread

Following our recaps of the newest mangae of the week we want to engage the fans in Q&A. However as we found out last week, the chat is tough to get questions from as everyone tries to ask something at once. So, to alleviate that problem we'll instead take questions from here first. Feel free to ask any manga related questions here guys, and we look forward to reading your questions live next week!

Toriko manga/anime differences

I don't know if either of you have seen the Toriko anime, but in case you have, I'm interested in hearing your opinions on the differences between Toriko manga and anime.
The anime is highly censored. There is no blood, nothing gets sliced in half, Toriko doesn't smoke, etc... It also introduces the main villains immediately instead of first hinting at them during the search for the puffer whale. Also for some reason they (the villains) show uncharacteristic interest in low-level ingredients like the garara gator and the rainbow fruit. There's also a news reporter. I don't know what her role is supposed to be.

I personally view this as shitting on the source material, but I'd like to know what you thought about it.

Training arcs in manga

What do you think about training arcs in manga? I'm not a huge fan of One Peice, but Ive heard that training barely takes place and characters just pop into scenes automatically knowing powerful techniques. On the flip side you have some manga like Bleach which the main character never stops training and whole chapters are completely dedicated to training. What are your opinions in this? Should training be done completely off screen, dedicate chapters to it or a happy medium?

I personally like training arcs like in Naruto cause its interesting seeing how ninjas in that world train and how techniques work. The arc where Naruto learns the Rasengan for example. But like you guys said last time, you can only have so much training like Ichigo which hes basically training all the time and even at that we don't get much explanation than just he fights. Then again I get a bit annoyed when in One Peice, Zoro is suddenly using demon powers with 6 hands and stuff and I'm just thinking to myself "Where did that come from?!". Anyways those are my thoughts on the matter.

Manga Art

Does the art style affect what manga you read? I personally find it grating to read Bleach even if the story is good because of the god aweful art style. Kubo has talent as an artist but he is so lazy it feels like he just spreads ink on the page and calls it good. On the other hand, I read Onidere religiously and that has the most aweful art ever put onto the pages of manga. Also, I recently read a manga called Choujin Gakuen which had a pretty stock story but the art caught my eye and I read through it because of it's uniqueness and the way the artist draws people. Should the art change the way you read a manga or should you just be able to enjoy the story?

Also, I read the first part of JoJo's and it was good but what's with all the manly crying?

First off, thank you for introducing me to Gamblefish. It is amusing me.

My questions are somewhat related. While it's not important to me, as a smut peddler in my own right, I am curious. Do you (Chris and Nik) feel that there is a line between fanservice being helpful to the manga and it being a distraction? And if so, where is it?

Do either of you read any good ecchi or even hentai manga? And if not, are you interested? Would you like some recommendations?

About Liar Game.

Rollo_T, you mentioned in WMR that you read and enjoyed the manga Liar Game. Did you know that there is a Japanese Drama of Liar Game? If you did and you have watched it what did you think of it? If you didn't watch it do you think it is something that could translate well to drama and if so why or why not?

Fairly simple questions if

Fairly simple questions if you ask me.

1. Tite Kubo, the scourge of the manga world. Do you think he will be able to redeem himself? Also are the Japanese hypnotized into thinking bleach is still a good manga?

2. I don't know if u have read Ookiku Furikabutte, but it's basically a sports manga about baseball, and unlike Major and One Outs, the pitcher in this anime doesn't just throw a damn freaking fastball for most of the series. My question is, if u have read it, what is ur view on it and are you disappointed with the lack of updates to the series itself.

After catching Up on Toriko

Okay so after listening to your podcast and hearing your recommendation to read Toriko I finally broke down and read it.

I really enjoyed it however the manga really reminds me of one of my other favorites HunterXhunter. Now, I want to know your opinion is one the truth of the world or Toriko?

EDIT: FRAG I was proven wrong in one chapter 143.

The world of Toriko is actually not our earth but an earth we terra-formed after leaving our original planet. The Reason Human-earth is higher than the Gourmet-earth is because we terraformed it when we got to Gourmet Earth. The strange creatures who wrote the book and built the pyramids are actually Avatar like bodies we had before reaching earth so Organic GT Robo. We cash land on the Terra-formed part of earth and lost our Technology and recovered from it eventually regaining our past history.

TLDR. We are aliens on Gourmet Earth and the weird things from the past are our organic GT Robo humans made.

I know it is far fetched but then again I have seen crazier things in other Mangas.

One more question; Will we have predictions thread for what we think will be the futures of current series.

Naruto turning point

Hey guys. My question this time is whether you think naruto got worse right after the timeskip, or right after the kakuzu/hidan arc. I tend to go with the later due to Kishimoto discarding orochimaru as a villan, and the increased focus on Sasuke. Also, which fight was more boring? Sasuke vs. Itachi or Sakura vs. Ino during the chunnin exam. Thx!

As we all know, Manga and Anime are closely related as 9 times out of 10 the Animes come from Manga.

Question is, in your opinion, is a Manga being adapted into an Anime a good thing, do they improve how the story is delivered or does it negatively impact it, and if either, why?

Also, while, Chris, I know anime has never been your thing but for Nik and whoever else may be joining you, what has been your favourite example of an adaptation done well?

sorry if this doesent seem like manga question but considering its the source material is Manga, yeah :V

Okay so my question is what do you think makes a popular Shonen Jump series? I mean a whole lot of the successful manag's don't exactly thrive on originality with their storylines or characters. so what exactly makes a newer series such a massive hit with the readership?

Thoughts on Visuel Novels

HELLO mister Rollo T man and mister Y ruler of time man

Have you ever read an Japanese visual novel? if not would you do so in the future?
most people know them more for the sub-genres Bishoujo or eroge.
if so what are you thoughts about this way of story telling. with more of a novel story telling with limited art(in comparison to manga) background music and in most cases today also voice acting. compared to anime or manga.

and what about those who got an manga or anime addaptation fx Fate/stay night or Clannad.

Many when first getting into or learn about Visuel Novels either is doing it for the promise of hentai or scared away by it. but i would like to say that there is many great visuel novels without and even if it was how i got into it, I quickly learned to love these for fantastic stories and characters.

Hey Chris and Nick! Two

Hey Chris and Nick! Two questions for you this time.

#1: A lot of people are introduced into manga by rather big name's like Naruto or One Piece and then never really bother to expand their repitoire. There might even be a few people who also haven't on this stream so my question is this. Should people try to open up to more indie manga's that aren't really as known to others and would you guys be able to recommend some on the stream right now?

#2: Sports manga's are personally my favorite. Some of the all time greats to me have to be eyeshield 21, Prince of Tennis and Ookiku Furikabutte. While some, by example, PoT and Eyeshield 21 are considered what some people say "DBZ Sports" since they are using flashy moves to show what they are doing, like sena turning into a ghost and splitting into 4 people, or Prince of Tennis where u have people shooting hadouken's from their tennis rackets and others like Ookiku Furikabutte or Ace of the Diamond show more of a realistic side to the sport. My question is to both of you, is it unfair in ur mind that despite some more realistic sports anime's that have really good plots are overshadowed by the manga that is trying to show someone doing the impossible in real life by making a ball knock out another player with a hadouken.

Filler

Dear RolloT and YRoT. I know you two aren't big fans of anime, but maybe you could enlighten me on this question. Why do anime series usually have filler arcs? I dont mean like small gag episodes like in Naruto when they wanted to see Kakashi's mask. I mean like 7+ episodes dedicated to a story which has no relevance to the over arcing plot. Why dont the anime studios which could save a couple of yen just stop and then come back later? Cause for example post time skip in Naruto the anime quality suffered quite a bit and it was annoying. Though the Soundtrack was still good for some reason :/
Also what are your general thoughts on Filler?

This one is about Naruto, Neji and the problems weekly stories

After the horrible chapter we had last week (the one where Naruto says he is Jesus, drawn in one panel to resemble him standing between the Holy Mother and God) and venting off a bit back at Y's forums, I decided to re-read some of the older Naruto chapter, you know for the ''good ol' days''. It was fun, I remembered all the great moments the series became famous for back then, Zabuza and Haku, The Chunin Exams and the like, you know, back when the series hadn't been a joke.

But then something caught my eye. Something I'm sure Kisihimoto had forgotten (just like he did forget that Naruto was the underdog and that Minato wasn't the guy who helped Naruto control the Nine tales) And that was the first fight of the Chunin Exams finales. Neji vs. Naruto, a battle between a genius and a loser. Neji was the opponent who believed that it was impossible for anyone to go against fate, that everyone is either born a loser of a winner, that no matter how talented you are, it doesn't matter since birth is what sets your path for life, and he resented it all. He concluded that this ugly chain of destiny was impossible to break, and ridiculed Naruto's dream of becoming the Hokage. Naruto in the end proved him wrong by beating him, and declared that no he is going to become Hokage and break the chains that bind Neji to his ugly fate. It was a nice, classic fight with a Screw Destiny conclusion, showing that people aren't ruled by birth to dictate their entire life, and that people had a choice in what they do with their life.

That is until it was reveled that nope, Naruto was never a loser, he was the Chosen One (TM) destined to save the Ninja world, that he was the messiah, the Saviour, what have you! he was going to save everyone from the Ninja System and the hatred and stuff. Not only that, but he was the son of the Holage too, and even his mother came down a line of important people who had always kept the Nine Tales on check, and can live for a really long time, longer than anyone else even, so he came from the highest birth, and is also a direct decedent from the Sinju, who are like these super awesome people who love love and protect and defend the weak and Justice and stuff, and he can sense people more than people who specialize in the art because he inherited it from his blood! But wait, theres more! Since day one (literally, Naruto was only a day old) his father has always believed that Naruto wasn't only the chosen one, but also that by sealing the Nine Tales in him, he would control it more than anyone else and master it completely!

So in the end, Neji was right after all, except he switched who was the loser and who was the genius in that fight. So instead of a fight to prove that you can Screw Destiny, it turned into a You Just Can't Beat Destiny No Matter What You Do.

So here's the question. Why is it so hard for some mangaka to just stick with their story? How did it get so screwed up, that it ended up becoming the opposite of what it started as?

Well, now I'm gonna throw in

Well, now I'm gonna throw in my questions ...

Greetings, Y is Nik ruler of Time and Chris rolling the T, hope you two are well.
this question probably moves very heavily in fan fiction territory, but maybe you want to answer anyway: if you could cross over any manga you have read with another, non-manga story, which one would it be and why?
For example, one says he or she favors a crossing over between One Piece and Bioshock. Why? Because he/she thinks that a clash between Luffy's and Andrew Ryan's differing opinion on freedom would make an interesting contrast. Also because I have no fantasy to conjure up fast a good example. Still I hope you get from which angle I am coming from. Of course this is not limited to any kind of story-genry, if you are so inclined, you can also present a Naruto/Muppets-crossover =)

friendly greetings from,
Der_Icebear

serious question

Just wondering a few things about what you thought of gender benders/gender flips/whatever in manga.

1) what do you think if it's just a one off plot point for a story arc or character like Emporio Ivankov?
2) what about if it's the basis for the whole series like Ranma 1/2 or Kashimashi Girl meats Girl?

Most importantly do you feel manga has ever well represented Transexual people? As one myself I think it has once or twice but 99.99% of the time it's kinda just for the fetish side of things and to have a scene where the guy turned girl feels himself up in the shower. I could go on for a while but I don't want to ramble too much so that's all I'll say for now.
