Suggestion for UWW

I figure since LordKat probably gets this a lot, I thought I'd compress everyones request into one thread. That being said, what would you like to see on UWW?

For me, I'd like to see either Strider on the Genesis, or Tiger Road on the TurboGrafx-16. Both are really difficult and I had some difficulties in passing even the beginning sections of those games. Maybe that's just me.

Edit: It's seems LordKaT has now done Strider. Hurray!

Drakkhen is pretty messed up, that'd be pretty interesting to see.

It's weird though, for all its flaws, I can see a lot of potential in that as a SNES rpg.

Edit: On second thought, RPGs do take a lot of time.

There's a lot though, Contras 1-3 and Hard Corps on Genesis, Comix Zone, and Ristar to name a few.

I have a couple of interesting ones:

Jim Power: Lost Dimension in 3D - An action platformer for the SNES.
Battle Squadron - A vertically scrolling shooter for Genesis.

Both should be rather difficult, but Jim Power less so.

I'm trying to think of some PS1 games he could do...

I would say Faxanadu, but I vaguely feel as though it'll be coming any day now. I'm trying to rack my brain for games I played as a kid, like...

- M.C. Kids (Not precisely "difficult", but has its challenging moments.)
- Star Tropics (Think this was already confirmed for an episode.)
- Puss n' Boots (Kind of bland but still had those patent obtuse NES difficulty moments.)
- Star Trek 25th Anniversary (NES version. I always thought this deserved more credit than it gets.)
- Animaniacs
- Any of the Mickey Mouse SNES games
- Sky Blazer
- Smash TV
- Super Adventure Island II

Castlevania II: Simon's Quest (game is insanely hard for all of the wrong reasons, but it still deserves more credit than it gets; once you know what you're doing it's a hella fun game)

Mega Man 9

Any of the three Super NES "Super Star Wars" trilogy of games - to this -day- I cannot beat these without cheat codes and I made it through "I Wanna Be The Guy"

The WiiWare versions of either Cave Story or La-Mulana

My suggestion

I've emailed LordKat about this ages ago. Now that he has a forum I'll submit it here. I hope he plays Sub-Terrania Until We Win. The game is a vertical/horizontal SHMUP that was "criticized in magazine reviews for its punishing difficulty." And rightly so. This game is HARD. Not hard because it is poorly designed, or because it was hard at the time. It's hard because it was made that way hard. It's for the Genesis. Here is the Wikipedia article about it, which is rather brief. I own the cart for this game, and I've never been able to beat it. Please Mr.LordKaT, beat this game.

I'd like to see Kenseiden for the SMS covered at some point. I'm not holding my breath tho since it didn't strike me as incredibly hard until the end sequence though where you have to charge up your flight power and also not get hit while flying (cause if you're touched, it breaks the spell and you usually burn alive) through a lava cave with random enemies flying at you at the same time etc.

Zillion just because I never figured out how to get past the motorcycle part.

I think he said at the meet up he wouldn't do Wizards and Warriors III because it's basicly a RPG.

What would I like to see Lord Kat play? I can't think of many that he hasn't done already, but I'd have to say Maximum Carnage. I wanted to like that game so much as a kid but I remember it being impossible.

I suggest Sentient for PSX\PC.

It's really hard to remember this game because the title is so generic, but the gameplay is unforgetable. Basically you get on this ship and you have to solve a radiation leak before the spaceship crashes into the sun. The game has nudity in it which is a definate +.

The crowning jewel of this game is the bizarre dialouge system. You can ask\tell people anything, and I mean anything. for example, you select someone, and then say "Go to," it will list every room in the game that you can tell them to go to.

Here's a youtube clip of it and it's hilarious graphics and bizarre conversation system:

Mike Tyson's Punch-Out

I finally beat Punch-Out when I was in high school, never could do it as a kid. I think it would make a great UWW episode because so many people have played it and so few have beaten it.

The game also breaks up so perfectly. Quickly get through the first two circuits, then devote a minute or two to the last half dozen fighters. You could even show the Tyson fight in its entirety and still keep the episode to a reasonable length.

Personally I would like to see him play (or atleast try to) one of the hardest games I have ever played, Sword Master for the NES. I could never get past it as a kid without using the infinite lives trick that was implimented in the game itself, but required a certain press of keys, which I did not know how to do at the time, so I never finished it.

I would like to see how LordKaT would fare in the game, its extremely challenging (atleast on the later stages)

As if there weren't enough

As if there weren't enough suggestions already, here's a few I've run into that I think could be good for this.

- Xexyz (NES). (Personally, I pronounce the first X as a Z and the Y as a long E.) Seems to fit right into the series' specialty. It's a platformer -- except where it's a horizontal shooter. Uh, yeah.

The story's pretty unusual, too. Quoted from the manual via GameFAQs: "In the year 2777, the Earth existed in a totally different atmosphere. Due to Nuclear Wars and natural disasters, the population decreased dramatically and only five small islands existed on the surface of the earth. Those five islands formed a nation and for hundreds of years those people lived peacefully. The new nation is called XEXYZ. At XEXYZ, aside from human beings, there exist fairies and spirits who lived under the ruling of King Xeu Star. But one day, XEXYZ was attacked by the mechanic fortress, GORUZA, from outer space. XEXYZ did not have many weapons to fight back and was forced to surrender. GORUZA built mechanic castles on each island, captured a queen from each island and confined them. King Xeu Star was murdered and
his only daughter, Maria Star, has gone missing since then. Battle-soldier Apollo could not endure the cruel treatment of GORUZA any longer. So he put on his space battle suit and challenged the mechanic beasts' empire!"

In my opinion at least, the controls are fairly solid, the game is fun, the sound and graphics are good (for an NES game, at least) and the challenge is there for the "right" reasons. No major glitches, little to no fighting with the controls, and no overly cheap tricks in level design or enemy placement.

To add to the fun factor, in addition to a couple of good power-ups, there's a variety of weapons you can get.

- Claymates (SNES). And you thought Xexyz was weird? OK, yeah, it is -- but so is this one. As far as style of play... it's a platformer.

Going from memory on the story here... you're a boy named Clayton. Your father has made a serum which can do... something interesting... involving clay. An evil witch doctor shows up and demands the serum. When your father refuses, the witch doctor turns you into a clay ball, kidnaps your father, and takes the serum.

The graphic style is obviously meant to look like claymation. As a result, it kinda reminds me of Donkey Kong Country. Again, pretty solid controls. Music's a bit cutesy, but it's not grating. Level design and enemy placement can be a little cheap sometimes; not as bad as some games that have been featured on UWW, but it can still get annoying at times. The upside on the level design point, though, is that some stages have multiple routes you can take.

The main challenge in this game, at least for me, comes from a couple of things. One, in your clay ball form, you die in one hit. You can pick up colored clay balls to transform into various animals (told you this was a weird one), which gives you different abilities (and makes it so that getting hit turns you back into the clay ball rather than killing you) and you can even pick up another colored clay ball to give yourself another hit in your animal form, and this extra clay ball also can be used to attack. Two, the game is long, and there's no way to save and no passwords. I've never had the patience to play all the way through.

The main "balancing factor" for the difficulty is that the game's actually pretty generous with extra lives. Which is good, because there are a few sections where the UWW catchphrase applies.

- Inspector Gadget (SNES). Actually, I'm not sure if this one's hard enough for UWW, but it did take me a good bit of practice before I could beat it. Style of play? Another platformer.

Pretty basic story -- Gadget's niece Penny is kidnapped by MAD, and you have to get her back.

Graphics and sound are pretty much standard fare for SNES. Not horrid, but not top-of-the-line either. Controls may take a bit of getting used to, but they're not bad.

Of course, you play as the titular Inspector. You can attack with your hands, feet, a fist from your hat, or even your head itself, all of which are on springs (giving you more range than you might otherwise expect). You can also get various gadgets; most are weapons, but you also get suction cup arrows, a propeller that lets you glide, and a gripping hand that lets you grab onto certain objects. All of your gadgets can be upgraded by getting additional copies of them. They have 4 levels, though the fourth will only work once after you pick up one of that gadget while at the third level. Like Arthur in the various Ghosts 'n' Goblins games, you get two hits; the first makes you lose your suit and run around in your boxers, and the second kills you.

So, what makes this one a challenge? Mostly the level design. There are some places where your platforming skills had better be good, or you're dead. (The only walkthrough on GameFAQs doesn't even go all the way through the game because of such a section in the fourth level.) The bosses range in difficulty from pretty easy to above-average; there's maybe a couple or so that are actually hard, though even the hard ones aren't as hard as some that UWW has featured. The non-boss enemies are usually not particularly threatening. Sometimes their placement gets a little cheap, but that's the exception rather than the rule.

Some tips I can give... first off, get used to your jump. It seems to have a very slight delay, and you'll need to be familiar with how high and how far over you can jump. Second, take your time. There IS a time limit, but it's a generous one. Running out of time is rarely an issue. Third, get familiar with your gadgets. The suction arrows, propeller, and grabbing hand are essential for some of the platforming sections, and you'll need to know what your attacking gadgets do to pick the right one for the right situation. Fourth, make good use of your attacking gadgets. You do have limited ammo for your gadgets (hats), but as long as you don't overdo it too much, you should be fine. Against some bosses, trying to kill them with your standard attacks is pretty much suicide (the second level boss comes to mind), but using your gadgets makes them FAR easier. In the regular levels, some enemies are placed such that you'll have a hard time hitting them with your standard attacks without taking a hit, but the right gadget will get the job done with much less risk.

- Hudson's Adventure Island (NES). One of the NES' classic titles. Very fun, and pretty hard. I don't know if I've ever beaten it without cheating.

The story's pretty much your standard story for an NES game -- you're Master Higgins, your girlfriend has been kidnapped, and you have to save her.

Graphics are fairly standard NES fare. Music's pretty memorable, though there's not a lot of variety. Controls are pretty standard, but some of the specifics take some getting used to.

A few things contribute to the challenge factor here. First, Master Higgins has no weapon to start, and the ones he does get take a little getting used to (especially the axe, which is the one you'll probably have the most often). Second, you die in one hit. The only exception is if you have the skateboard, in which case getting hit makes you lose the skateboard (of course, since the skateboard makes it so you can't stop, you might not want it a lot of the time...), or if you have the invincibility fairy. Third, the energy meter; you have to collect food throughout the levels to keep it from running out, and you can't really afford to take your time. (Luckily, the energy meter actually goes away during the boss fights.) Fourth, like in Super Mario Bros. 1, you can't go backwards; once the screen has scrolled past a spot, you can't go back to it. This can (and often does) lead to situations where you can't make a jump because you scrolled the screen too far forward.

- Shadow Dancer (Genesis). Another platformer. I could be wrong, but I think this one's been covered by others. Nevertheless, it fits the conditions for UWW. It's actually a sequel, to a game named Shinobi, though I played this one without playing Shinobi first. You don't really miss much by doing that.

You are Joe Musashi, a ninja, and you're going up against a crime syndicate, Union Lizard. You have ninja training, a sword, some magic, an unlimited supply of ninja stars, and your dog, Yamato. They have many henchmen, a few monsters, and a leader who can create natural disasters. Hardly seems fair, right? (:P)

Graphics and sound are good. Controls are properly responsive.

Where does the challenge come from? First off, this is another one of those games where you die in one hit. With certain exceptions where you won't get hurt, if something hits you, you're dead. Second, that ninja magic I mentioned? Only works once per level (not sure if you get it back if you die, but I don't think so). It clears the screen of enemies, which is nice, and against bosses, delivers two hits out of six. Third, the enemies and enemy placement. Holy... shiitake mushrooms. Not only will there often be an insane number of enemies on the screen, but you're going to have to make sure that you don't mess up, or you WILL get hit. Think you can simply launch ninja stars all day to deal with the enemies? Nope. Between how some enemies are placed and the fact that a number can block your ninja stars, you're gonna have to make good use of Yamato and your sword. Fourth, rather than simply getting to the end of the stage, in most stages, you have to rescue a certain number of hostages. (No hostages in the boss stages of course, and there's at least one regular stage with no hostages.) While they're usually along the route, or at least not far out of the way, some are well-guarded, so you'll have to be on top of your game to rescue them without dying. (Good news is, if you save a hostage, that hostage remains saved even if you die. Also good news is, one hostage per level will power up your ninja stars and sword into fireballs and a kick with a blue... aura. You can tell which one because that hostage is a girl, while the others are guys. Bad news is, because of the first bit of "good news", if you save that hostage, then die, you lose the power up, and won't be getting it again for that level. Oh, and if you finish a level with the power up, it does NOT carry over into the next level.) Fifth, you have a limited number of lives and continues. While there are extra lives to be had, there's not a lot of 'em.

Tips I can give... first, don't play without the ninja stars. The options menu gives you the option to do so, but this game's hard enough without adding that extra challenge. Yes, you get bonus points for finishing a stage without using your ninja stars (using the aforementioned option guarantees you this bonus), but with one exception (a stage where the only enemies can't be hurt by your ninja stars anyway), it's a lot harder that way, and not really worth it. Second, don't get up close to enemies if you don't have to. For many, you do, but if you can take care of things with your ninja stars, do so. Third, make sure you understand how Yamato works. Yamato can't actually kill enemies, but he can hold them in place so that you can kill them. However, if Yamato gets hit by an attack when you're launching him (or if you wait too long after he grabs an enemy), Yamato turns into a puppy, and can't do anything until you rescue a hostage or use your magic. Against some enemy types, you absolutely MUST NOT launch Yamato at them; it won't work, and Yamato will end up in puppy form. Fourth, after each boss fight, there's a bonus stage where you can use your ninja stars to kill enemy ninjas, and if you kill enough of them, you get extra lives. However, you will get a guaranteed extra life if you simply wait through the bonus stage without throwing any stars. Since it's pretty hard to get the extra lives the other way (there's 50 ninjas in each of these; you have to kill 48 to get 1 life, 49 for 2 lives, or all of them for 3 lives), I recommend just going for the guaranteed one life. Fifth, save that ninja magic. Use it only when you need it. (And trust me, there will be times when you REALLY need it.) The main exception to this is on bosses; while you do get a bonus for finishing a level (be it a regular level or a boss fight) without using your magic, the bosses are hard enough that in most cases, you might as well use the magic.

on UWW,it's one of those games from my childhood that i've never gotten close to beating, despite beating the Arcade version of the game.

This games much harder due to much weaker attacks, and the fact the enemies seem to always be able to counter attack after being hit...then theres ranged enemies who spam their attacks like no tomorrow, and the fact that you are invincible for only a few seconds after being hit, being able to be hit immediately after getting back up

the immortal

a great game for UWW is "The Immortal" for genesis. it comes on many platforms but i think genesis is the best.

it's the perfect UWW game. it's very difficult, but it's still a fun game. it has a lot in common with old school adventure games like the king's quest series. it's potentially very short. if you do everything right you can clear it in 45 minutes, but most likely it'll take longer because you'll die so much. death is not so frustrating because your character dies in so many creative ways. you'll actually want to see how each situation or monster will kill you.

in fact, it might even be more fun if you did a full on "let's play" of the game rather than an UWW. but either way it would be cool to see you play this game.

Holy Diver was done already

Holy Diver was done already in a crossover, so I only have one suggestion now:
Super Mario Bros. 2... more commonly known as 'The Lost Levels' here in the US. The first time I played it as part of Super Mario All-Stars when I was a kid, I was haunted for life. It's the only Super Mario game that has ever kicked my ass. Funny thing is, it gets even harder after finishing world 8.

Maybe this just falls under the subject as 'Hard as a Kid' but I loved the Pocky and Rocky games for the SNES. They were unique and rather fun, and the second one, while easier was a BLAST to play because of the hilarity of throwing your partner into the boss and watching them explode... or into a wall for a moment of hilarity.

The Ys games, hands down

Pretty much any game in the Ys series. If you don't know, Ys is kinda like Hydlide with a slightly less severe case of the ancient, and therefore it's a lot more bearable and fun to play.

It's a lot more skill based thankfully, but in a way, also more difficult. One hell of a series, though. I still can't beat the first one, I've beaten all the others though.

Might I suggest 1,2, or Oath in Felghana? OiF is from 2005 though so it's quite new, but it is a PC game, and it still feels very old school and is balls to the wall hard in some spots, and this is coming from a guy who's beaten every Ninja Gaiden and Castlevania game to date so I know tough games.

Also my personal favorite versions of 1 and 2 are the Eternal versions, also known as Ys 1 and 2 Complete released on the PC in I believe 98 and 2000, check those ones out if you can. The Turbografx version is probably second best, and the Sega Master System would probably be third.

UWW: B.O.B. for the SNES

After watching UWW, I decided to go back and play through all of my old games, and was able to beat some of the ones that when I was younger I was not able, but there is still one game of my collection that remains unbeatable for me, that being B.O.B. for the SNES. THe game has 7 worlds, and level 2 and the difficulty curve is so steep, that world 2 is around where it starts getting too hard to pass. I do believe it to be a worth challenge for the beater of all games :P

Hellfire

If you really want a game that makes you tear your hair out, give Hellfire on the Genesis a try. It's a horizontal shmup type of game and i've never made it past level 3. Ever. It is actually a good game with a neat mechanic that i've never seen before that let's you switch the way your ship fires in 4 different ways, forward, backwards, upa dn down and then diagonally at all 4 directions at the same time. To top it of the game has some kickass music and is insanely hard. Probably the hardest game i've ever played.

You want a game that is hard, almost impossible, obtuse? Try GODS on genesis/snes, unbelievably hard!

I endorse the spongebob flash

I endorse the spongebob flash game as being ridiculously hard and fun. Ive made it to level 3 one time by fluke.
